Some Mold Remediation Jobs in the Monroe Area Are Larger Than Others--SERVPRO Handles Them All

Information About and Remediation Steps for Mold Cleanup

Fire or water damage is usually easy to see in a Monroe home. The disaster most homeowners never realize until it is widespread throughout their residence is mold.

To stop and remediate mold damage effects in Monroe, SERVPRO uses the five-step procedures in the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Mold Remediation Standard. It protects the residence as technicians clean and remove mold, and reduces the risk of further infestations occurring after our team completes each task.

First, technicians reduce mold exposure. They isolate the affected areas by sealing all entrances and access points with plastic sheeting. This step also includes sealing the air and heating vents to prevent contaminating them and to block accidentally spreading mold spores to untouched parts of the home.

As technicians begin, the team leader documents every action. He includes all work, to include the results of the initial inspection and testing of each room in the home. The results he matches to industry standards for safe levels and uses them to measure progress during the task and to ensure his team accomplishes each procedure correctly. This step is highly dependent upon the degree of the mold infestation.

Now, SERVPRO specialists control the mold contamination at its source. They establish negative air pressure to draw mold spores and particles out of the air as team members demolish structural property too infested to clean.

Next, they remove the mold. Spores drawn out by negative air pressure are usually forced outside of the home, but can also be captured using a vacuum with a special, HEPA filter. This High-Efficiency Particulate Air (Arrestance) filter can trap particles as small as 0.3 microns. Putting this size in perspective, a human hair diameter is 50 microns, and the human eye cannot see anything smaller than 40 microns without magnification lenses. Technicians wipe down spores that settled onto a surface with a damp or dry cloth. They allow time for spores disturbed by cleaning to settle and then repeat wiping and vacuuming until the air content is back to a safe level.

After removing the mold, technicians lower the humidity. Mold spores remain dormant and harmless without enough moisture. To remove the threat of a returning infestation, team members set up dehumidifiers to draw moisture from the air and use a combination of air movers and exhaust fans to force excess moisture out of the structural property and blow it out of the home. Then an antimicrobial agent can be sprayed or fogged into the affected areas.

Mold is a silent and unimpressive looking disaster, but it can still cost homeowners thousands of dollars in remediation expenses. If you see or suspect a mold problem in your home, call SERVPRO of Monroe / West Monroe at (318) 345-5121.
